I’m finally ready to take that step and retire. If you have been in the military, or know someone who has like a family member or friend, then you know this can be a difficult position. I’ve served in the military for 20 yrs and when I retire I will have completed 21 years. But I think it’s time to move onto my next phase. So where do I begin?
I’m starting this blog because I’m starting this phase, but I may need some assistance to keep me on-track. I have a tendency to procrastinate, which is why I need assistance. I’m scheduled to retire in Oct 2009 and I told myself I would start the process of preparing for my departure in Oct 2008. Well let’s just say I haven’t started anything yet, and to top it off I began graduate school in August, because I have this insatiable thirst for knowledge, go figure. Listed below are a few things that I need to do:
1. Update Resume –done
2. Post resume
3. Update Medical history for VA benefits
4. Look for non-federal jobs
5. Take advantage of the programs by the military for retiring soldiers (ACAP). – went to initial meeting.
6. Decide what I want my next job to be?
Okay so that’s all I have right now, pretty bleak huh? If anyone out there has been in the military or made the decision to change jobs, could you please give me some pointers on what I need to do? I will continue to update this blog as I come up with new items for my list.
